Ethiopia 'Halo Beriti' Natural – Espresso

what comes after gscheid.sonnig? This year the answer is a natural from Ethiopia – and for once, one with a name and a face.

The coffee comes from Mengeche Derso, who farms 15 hectares of coffee in Beriti in the Yirgacheffe highlands – at 2,200 to 2,300 metres, about as high as coffee grows in Ethiopia. At 62, he has spent a whole life in coffee; four of his twelve children work the farm with him, and the soil is fed with manure and plant residue rather than chemicals. That we know any of this is far from a given: Ethiopian coffee is usually a blended lot from hundreds of smallholders. This one comes through Cafe Imports' Single Farmer Project – Mengeche negotiates his own price, his name is on the contract, and the quality premium ends up with him.

Processing is natural, the classic dry way: whole cherries dry in the sun on raised beds for several days, the fruit staying on until the very end and passing all its sweetness into the bean. Grade 1, Ethiopia's top sorting grade.

In the cup: on the nose it reminds us of peach iced tea; as espresso that turns into apricot and a thick toffee sweetness. The acidity is there, but soft and round – our roast profile draws sweetness and a velvety, gentle body out of this natural above all. A treat on its own, and with milk the apricot turns into a proper fruit yoghurt.

So Yirgacheffe isn't just floral and delicate. Mengeche Derso's coffee shows its sweet, juicy side.
